What is the difference between a Food Allergy and Food Intolerance?
Food allergies are quite rare, affecting about 2% of the adult population. During an allergic reaction, the body’s immune system believes it is being invaded and produces IgE (Immunoglobulin E) antibodies to fight off the food or drink ingredient it mistakenly considers to be harmful.
The body’s inflammatory response in this circumstance can vary from mild to severe and can affect one or more systems in the body, such as the digestive system, respiratory system or the skin. In extreme cases, the immune system triggers a response throughout the whole body, resulting in a systemic reaction (anaphylaxis) which is potentially fatal.
The most common foods that cause allergic reactions are:
- groundnuts (peanuts)
- nuts from trees (Brazil nuts, walnuts, almonds, and hazelnuts)

Food intolerance is not usually life-threatening but can make you feel extremely unwell and is caused by sensitivities to certain foods. The symptoms of food intolerance can be delayed for many hours or even days and for this reason it is often difficult to identify the problem foods.

“I have had a chronic cough for 7 years which has effected my life both at work and my home life. After numerous investigations through the doctors ENT they found nothing. A friend recommended Anna to me to test for any food intolerances.
After one week of finding out I was highly intolerant to Dairy and Yeast and a few others, my cough had disappeared at present. I feel like a different person already. I have dramatically changed my eating and I will never look back. I feel like me again. Thank-you Anna I cant thank you enough.
